Hermes Resort

It’s hard to believe that Resort presentations continue into July overlapping the Fall ‘17 couture shows that have started in Paris and the odd Spring ‘17 presentations that some houses are doing in a response to fast fashion. The Hermes presentation, which took place in the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré store on July 3rd, was worth the wait. Resort is the fourth collection from Nadege Vanhee-Cybulski as artistic director for the Hermes women’s collection. She tactfully dealt with the heritage of the brand without being overly weighed down by it. She offered the Hermes customer, who wants for nothing and is not trying to impress anyone, real clothes to be worn in everyday life. But an elevated everyday life it is with exquisite fabrics and leathers and flawless quality that is ingrained in the DNA of the brand.

It must be daunting for any designer to step into this driver’s seat. Hermes is held to a higher standard even in a luxury market that prides itself on excellence. The brand exudes wealth but stealthily and with a subtlety that few designers fully understand. Overt sex appeal and trends, the usual jumping off point for many collections, have no place in the world of Hermes. The designer must therefore dig deep within themselves to deliver a collection that hits all the requisite coded Hermes marks while offering newness, innovation and ultimate luxury. Vanhee-Cybulski has succeeded in this her strongest collection for Hermes thus far. Here are my favorite picks from Resort ’17.

Fun fact: Vanhee-Cybulski was design director for The Row and also worked for Martin Margiela.
