In New York this weekend the temperatures dipped below freezing. Suddenly hats, gloves and the works were required just to step outside. On Friday I suggested a do it yourself scarf project for the weekend, (I’ve yet to start mine) now my attention has turned to the head. When it’s really cold out I must have a hat on. I firmly believe all that business about losing a significant amount of body heat through the head. The problem is my hat game has become stale. I’m not a statement hat kind of person, but the cashmere caps I’ve been wearing suddenly feel tired. A beret seems like the logical answer.
The beret has been around for centuries and has been associated with everything from the military to mimes. This fall the beret is having a moment. Maria Grazia Chiuri had black leather berets by Stephen Jones on every exit in the Christian Dior Fall ’17 show. On line there’s a wide variety available, from classic felt to knit. Here are my favorites mixed in with classic photos demonstrating the timeless appeal of the beret.
