The end of the long cold New York winter is in sight and the thought of transitioning to spring clothes has great appeal. But not so fast, March and April can still be pretty raw. To get through this sartorial dead zone I’ve chosen a range, in price and style, of versatile transitional spring coats. This year there are many revamped versions of the trusty trench, which fit the bill nicely. Longer lengths, more volume and an exaggeration of the traditional trench details breathe new life into an old favorite. But don’t worry they’re still classic enough to look good for years to come, qualifying as investment pieces. Though color will be important for spring, resist the temptation for now and stick to classic khaki, navy or black. You can always layer these over the brightest spring hues.
