As promised In The Essential Summer Bag post, I’ve researched another necessity of summer, the straw sun hat. When it comes to straw hats I’m a purist and an enthusiast. Purist because I prefer classic shapes in the natural straw color, void of most adornment. I’m an enthusiast because there is no better way to protect the delicate skin of the face from the sun than a good hat. I always liberally apply sunscreen and wear a hat whenever I’m at the beach or pool and my face still gets plenty of color. I credit hats; worn religiously since my twenties, for preserving my face despite the amount of time I’ve spent basking in the sun. I can’t say the same for the rest of me, a battlefield of sun damage. Take inspiration from the vintage images included and find the shape that appeals to you, it’s a classic that hasn’t changed much over the decades and remains as alluring as ever.
