Strong is the New Sexy

One unintended consequence of a Trump administration is the revival of an energized women’s movement. This past Saturday women’s marches took place across the United States and in 30 countries around the world. This is unprecedented! My daughter’s first academic paper for college argued that most young women did not want to be labeled feminists. The word had negative connotations they did not want to be associated with. I think her thesis was correct at the time but in the wake of Hillary’s electoral loss and Trump’s ascent that has changed. In a matter of months hordes of women of all ages have embraced the pussy hat and taken to the streets. Once again feminists are in vogue. Gloria Steinem and Cecile Richards are in the news and inspiring a new generation of feminists.

Maria Grazia Chiuri showed a tee shirt that read we should all be feminists on her spring ’17 runway, foretelling the movement that was about to happen. With a renewed sense of purpose women are embracing their strength and asserting their right to a place at the table. We need clothes to get the job done in and we are definitely not dressing to please men. Strong is the new sexy as exemplified in these spring picks.
