Kaftans have been a fashion constant since the 60s when jet-setting stars donned them at parties or while elegantly lounging on off time. In the early twentieth century Paul Poiret introduced kaftans to fashionable society woman as a welcome alternative to corseted gowns. Most modern designers include a few opulent kaftans in their collections for wealthy Middle Eastern clients. I’ve long held the fantasy that when I’m very old I’ll go full out Endora and dress only in kaftans. And why not, what else gives you comfort, coverage and drama in one chic package?
Another crazy thing about kaftans is they look good on everyone regardless of size gender and age. Liz Taylor famously relied on them in her later years when she was not so svelte as did Grace Kelly. And in this age of ambiguous gender identity kaftans are perfectly androgynous. In my opinion there’s no sartorial problem a good kaftan can’t solve.
Praise be the kaftan! To further this sentiment I’ve gathered images of inspirational kaftan moments. Most are from the 60’s, a particularly fertile kaftan time. The current kaftan moment is a bit more laid back and approachable. If you haven’t already, go on get a kaftan, see the links below for my edit of killer kaftans.
