Feels Right For Fall

The Sartorialist
The Sartorialist  An oversized coat looks great for fall.

I don’t seek out and follow trends, I go by what looks and feels right to me now. There is always something in the air, maybe it’s been around on the fringes for a while and then it’s suddenly ubiquitous. What ever it is I try to tune into my own barometer for change and think about what proportions I see myself in as the new season approaches.

With all the talented street style photographers working today there’s always plenty of food for thought and inspiration at our fingertips. Who looks cool? Who looks contrived? Fashion has been heading to a more casual place for a while now, which makes it harder to find the look that strikes the balance between rocking it and trying too hard.

Here are some images that speak to me and inform how I see my fall shaping up. What new direction will you go in this Fall?

Although the bomber has been around for a few seasons now it’s still important. It looks great when paired with high waisted pants and the big pants that are everywhere for fall.

Speaking of big pants, they could be tough depending on your height but I’m going to give them a try despite my vertical shortcomings. If the fabric is fluid enough it will appear almost like a skirt. I love the big folds in the bottom photo.

And speaking of big folds, they are showing up everywhere. I love the back drape of this blouse and also feel strongly for silk tops, but messed up as this one is.

I love the look of the above nipped waist leather coats and the bordeaux color is perfect.

The short bobs in the last three photos are also very inspiring for fall. A clean smaller head feels right with all the oversized layers.

What defines a season is the shift of proportions. Keep your eyes open to find what works best for you early in the season and follow your own instincts.
