Imagine hosting a breakfast that starts at 8:30 AM for 50 people on Thanksgiving morning and then just hours later hosting a full-out Thanksgiving dinner for family. My friend Karen, a talented fine artist, her husband and four children do exactly that. Having a beautiful sprawling apartment at tree top height facing Central Park West comes with certain unwritten responsibilities, namely having people over to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

For my international readers let me explain the significance of this. Since 1924 Macy’s, billed as the world’s largest store, has sponsored the largest parade in the world. Three and a half million people line the route and fifty million watch it on TV. The Thanksgiving Day Parade is a New York tradition and a lot of fun to watch with the best marching bands from across the country, floats with celebrities, and the main attraction, giant character balloons.

The family purchased the apartment several years ago; gut renovated it and enlisted my favorite interior designer, Miles Redd, to decorate. As an artist Karen was game for the daring color combinations Redd proposed and implemented with great aplomb. The final result is an inviting, comfortable family apartment, great for entertaining. Hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving. Now high gear to the holidays.
