Hedi Slimane presented his highly anticipated debut Celine collection in Paris on Friday. His uncompromising collection for both men and women was pure Hedi, an unapologetic continuation of his work at Dior Homme and Saint Laurent. I was expecting an evolution of his well-established vision as insinuated in my Celine Wars story last week. But now it’s clear that Slimane is sticking to his guns with one very clever and timely addition; he’s offering all the menswear looks for women. This is a great angle and will appease at least some of the displaced Celine customers.
The clothes are aimed at an international contingent of rich kids, populating clubs and campuses on daddy’s dime. However, competition for this latest Holy Grail of a customer base is keen, though there’s a huge difference between a Supreme drop and a Celine look. I have much more respect for the kid with the style and wherewithal to source a similar look at their local thrift. The boots shown with every women’s look though may be a sound investment for that same kid.
Undoubtedly, there will be a contingent of women executives unwilling to subscribe to Slimane’s 80’s new wave aesthetic. For the displaced Celine customer I offer the following suggestions from less obvious choices like The Row and Victoria Beckham. All are from the spring 2019 collections.
