Now Let’s Talk About Hair

A gorgeous picture of Nicole Kidman but that hair is beyond!

My hair has been the bane of my existence for as long as I can remember. As a child I started fighting my naturally curly (a nice word for frizzy) hair from the time self-awareness kicked in. I like to think I could have been president if not for the hours I’ve dedicated over the years to hair management.

Humidity is not my friend and though I love summer and all things water my hair is ready to thwart my good times at every turn. My weekend summer game plan is to load it with product and slick it back into a tiny bun, not the best look for me I grant you, then I don’t have to think twice about not getting wet just to save my blow-out. Weekdays I’m still a slave to blow-drying and whatever other forms of heat are required to beat it into submission. Now here’s the thing, although I don’t like my unpredictable curls I do like what stylists call movement meaning natural looking waves and bounce as illustrated in the above photos. I wish I could tell you how to get this, if only I knew. On a good hair day I might get something in that ballpark from a combination of air drying, blow-drying, and strategic heat application. I don’t have a magic bullet product to recommend either, though I can’t live without good old fashioned hair gel, don’t really care what kind, just something to put on my wet hair to get the ball rolling. I also use Keihl’s Strengthening and Hydrating Hair Oil and Cream (a leave in conditioner) out of guilt for all the heat torture I subject my hair to.

Hot and humid, hair gets progressively bigger and note uncontrolled bottom curl activity. Side note, yes somehow I managed to give birth to this one with the straight blond hair and not a hair care in the world.

In the interest of simplifying my life I would love to find a less laborious way to manage my hair. The trend for a more natural looking head of untamed curls is peaking about now á la the it model of the moment Mica Arganaraz and her fabulous gypsy like head of curls.

I read somewhere Diane von Fustenburg said it was a life changer when she finally stopped taming her curls and embraced them. She basically went on to conquer the world.  I honestly don’t even know what my hair would look like if I just, god forbid, let it dry naturally. Maybe I need to schedule a weekend in total isolation with hella product to find out. Suggestions welcome!
