This past weekend was a milestone for me. Both daughters were dropped off at college on Saturday. After a very long day and eight hours of driving I came home to an empty nest. I hate even using that term, but it does best describe it. I’ve been mentally preparing for this day and have piled on projects to keep me busy. High on the list is de-cluttering in preparation of putting our Upper East Side co-op on the market after 14 years of living here. Proximity to schools is no longer a consideration, freeing me to settle in a new neighborhood and start fresh as a single woman.
I’ve chronicled my flirtation with de-cluttering before in Clean Living and Clean Living Continued, but the results were basically Band-Aids where stitches were needed and I fell back to what I call crap management. Now my hand is forced and I don’t have two girls foiling my efforts to scale back. So here we go again but this time I will truly Marie Kondo the hell out of this place and to keep me focused, document my efforts here. But first some inspiration for the new look I’m going for. Heretofore I’ve been a pre-war traditionalist but now I crave an open kitchen, living and dining room in either a modern building or old industrial building that has been gut renovated. I’m even considering leaving Manhattan for the wilds of Brooklyn. I welcome your comments and advice and hope you’ll stick with me for the journey.
