Fun fact about me, I hate to pay full retail. Maybe it’s all the years I was fortunate enough to have a clothing allowance from the companies I worked for, or access to insider’s sample sales. Understandably I’ve developed an aversion to full price, though I imagine I’m not alone. We’ve all been conditioned to sales that start before the season is in full swing. Not too long ago Spring/Summer would go on sale after July 4th. Now the sales start before Memorial Day. I’ve learned to become more strategic with sales by eying in advance the investment pieces that would round out my wardrobe and be worn for years to come.

Expensive, well-tailored jackets are great investment pieces and also quite versatile. A tuxedo jacket can be paired with jeans, worn as a suit or thrown over a floaty dress. Another must have classic is a white blazer; I love how Emmanuelle Alt works hers with a tee, jeans and heel.

Most of you know that I’m a big fan of For Restless Sleepers. This richly printed smoking jacket could work in so many ways, for evening with a fluid silk pant or over a long skirt or slip dress. I would also wear it more casually over an oyster or faded jean. The matching pant would only increase the possibilities. It’s a classic that always looks new and interesting.

A cape or throw adds newness of silhouette and drama. This cape based on a classic trench would spice up the most basic outfit. It’s the kind of piece that will save the day time and again. Investment pieces should look and feel expensive. The luxury of a high quality cashmere throw feels wonderful on but like the cape it instantly elevates whatever you’re wearing and is the perfect travel and transitional piece.

I’m a huge Dries Van Noten fan and particularly loved his spring ’18 collection. These fantastic scarf blazers, surprisingly, made it to the sales. They’re classic but make a big statement and are the perfect day to evening jacket.

Etro is known for its intricately woven and richly colored prints. This metallic, jacquard kimono is a collectable and an investment piece to enjoy for life.
