In June I wrote about the enduring style of Lauren Hutton. She can do all out glamour and own it, but more often than not she wears tried and true American classics. Fashion basics have played heavily in her personal style over the years, though noticeably they are always the perfect basic. So with Lauren Hutton as my style beacon of light I’ve gathered a selection of fashion basics in natural fibers with just the right cut.
This summer for my own basics I’ve relied heavily on Everlane. Their quality is outstanding and I’ve been very happy with the fabrics. The styling misses the mark occasionally, but there are enough options to usually find what you’re looking for. I scrutinize the photos to make sure I like the cut of the sleeves, neck and body of tops and always check the fabrication. So far I have not sent anything back. Their white shirts are great and priced extremely well. I also have practically lived in the slides that I bought in brown. On multiple occasions women have chased me down to ask where I bought them. Another basic that I’m quite happy with this summer is my Levi’s Wedgie High-Rise Jean. I looked for a long time for a jean that was high waisted with a straight more relaxed leg, moderately faded wash and no holes. I haven’t worn Levi’s since I was a teenager but I wanted to get back to basics with a non-designer jean. Who knew Levis now has a plethora of cuts, further complicating my search. I travelled far and wide for these finally finding them quite by accident in Urban Outfitters. But be warned, the hem is cut and cropped so if you’re blessed with long legs they may be too short. And side note, our style beacon of the day, Hutton only wears Levi’s jeans, that’s good enough for me.
In the spirit of Lauren Hutton here is my fully vetted selection of fashion basics.
